JAMES BUCHANAN
Senator recommends a military appointment for a future diplomat.
ALS: "James Buchanan" as U.S. Senator, 1p,
7¾x10. Lancaster, 1839 July 19. With integral leaf addressed by
Buchanan to: "Hon: Joel R. Poinsett/Secretary of War/Washington City Mr.
Roland Dubs}". In full: "Permit me to recommend to you the
appointment of Mr. Roland Dubs as a Lieutenant in the Army. From what I have
heard & seen of him I believe him to be worthy of the appointment which he
solicits; it will, therefore, be gratifying to me, in common with his numerous
friends, should he prove successful." There is no record of DUBS'
appointment in the Army. However, on March 1, 1847,President Polk appointed
Roland Dubs of Pennsylvania as Consul of the United States for the port of
Maracaibo, Venezuela, a post he held until his death in 1855. JOEL R.
POINSETT represented South Carolina in Congress from 1821-1825 and was
appointed the first U.S. Minister to Mexico (1825-1829). When he returned to the
United States in 1829, he brought with him a flowering plant that was called the
poinsettia in his honor. As Van Buren's Secretary of War from 1837-1841,
Poinsett reorganized U.S. military forces and successfully directed the second
Seminole War. Folds, vertical fold touches the "s" in
James. Lightly creased. Shaded at left edge. Address leaf shows folds, which are
slightly shaded and a 2¾x3-inch triangular cut at lower blank
margin.
