GROVER CLEVELAND
Signed the year before his death by an active 70-year-old father of
four.
Printed Engraved Image inscribed and signed at lower margin in pencil:
"Grover Cleveland/To J.B. Beaty/June 10, 1907". B/w,
7¾x10¾ overall, image 5½x7¼ (one surface). Mounted to a page of similar size.
Cleveland signed this image at the age of 70. Eight days earlier,
he and his 42-year-old wife, Frances Folsom Cleveland, had celebrated their 21st
wedding anniversary. Cleveland was the second and last bachelor elected as U.S.
President. The Clevelands were married in the White House; their second child,
Esther, was born there in 1893. The former President died in Princeton, New
Jersey on June 24, 1908, just over a year after signing this image. Fragile.
The image is cracked but has been reattached by the mounting on verso. The
cracks are not touching face or torso, they just nick the final flourish of the
"d" (you have to look for it) and touch the "7" in the
year. ¾- to 1¼-inch shaded border around image from prior framing includes all
the writing, which is bold and legible.
