HARRY S TRUMAN
Seven weeks after leaving the White House, he forwards a check to his
presidential library.
Partly Printed Check endorsed: "Pay to Harry S Truman/Library Inc or
order/Harry S Truman" on verso of Partly Printed Check signed: "Russell
E. Silvius", 6x2¾. Bryan, Ohio, 1953 March 7. Payable to "Harry
S. Truman" for $3.00. Truman first started planning for his library
shortly before this check was written. He wanted to put it on the remnant of
the family farm in Grandview, Missouri owned by him, his brother and sister.
Truman's brother, Vivian, was not completely happy about the idea of putting a
library there. When an architect and a member of Truman's staff involved in
planning the Truman Library went to the farm to identify a good site, Vivian
indicated he wanted to put it in a low-lying swampy area. The architect pointed
to a much better site, on high ground with a good view of the surrounding
countryside. Vivian looked it over and pronounced, "Ain't no use wastin' good
farmland on any dang old library." The Truman Library ended up in
Independence on land donated by the City of Independence, only a few blocks from
Truman's home at 219 N. Delaware Street. It was dedicated on July 6, 1957.
President and Mrs. Truman are buried in the courtyard of the building.
Endorsement stamp touches signature. Overall, fine
condition.
