|
RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Penned as President-elect ten weeks before he found out he had
been elected President.
ALS: "R.B. Hayes" as President-elect, 1p, 7¾x5½. Columbus,
Ohio, 1876 December 21. To Hon. Thomas C. Donaldson, Philadelphia. With
original stamped, postmarked envelope addressed by Hayes to Donaldson.
Stained, soiled and creased. Docketed in pencil (unknown hand). In full:
"I found your letter very interesting. I am glad to hear from [you]
often but short. I return the enclosed." Republican Ohio
Governor Rutherford B. Hayes had been elected 19th U.S. President on November 7,
1876, six weeks before he wrote this letter, but he was still unaware of it.
Democratic New York Governor Samuel J. Tilden had defeated him in popular votes,
4.3 million to 4.0 million, and led in electoral votes, 184-165, but 20
electoral votes were in dispute. To end the deadlock, congressional leaders
agreed to appoint a bipartisan electoral commission consisting of seven
Democrats, seven Republicans and one independent. Five Supreme Court Justices,
five U.S. Senators and five House members were selected. Unexpectedly, the
independent member, Supreme Court Justice David Davis, retired and a Republican
Justice, Joseph P. Bradley, was substituted. The count began on February 1, 1877
and was completed on Friday, March 2, 1877. The commission voted strictly on
party lines and the Republican electoral votes were declared valid, making Hayes
the victor by 185-184. Hayes resigned as Governor of Ohio on Friday, March 2nd.
As Inauguration Day (March 4th) was on a Sunday, he was sworn in as 19th U.S.
President in a private ceremony in the White House on Saturday, March 3rd, the
first time a President-elect had taken the oath of office in the White House. A
public ceremony was held at the Capitol on Monday, March 5th. Lightly creased.
Folds do not touch signature. Fine condition. Two
items.
