BILL CLINTON
Writes to his grandmother during his first few months in college.
Rare ALS: "Love, Bill", 1p, 6x8. No place, no date. With
original stamped (5-cent American Music), postmarked envelope
(Washington, D.C., 1964 November 25), back flap removed, nicked at top edge,
addressed by the 18-year-old Georgetown University freshman class president
to his maternal grandmother: "Mrs. Edith Cassidy/c/o Hope Nursing
Home/Hope, Arkansas". In full: "Dear Mammaw, I don't have much
time, but I want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for the stamps and
money. The picture of Phil McLarty and David Chism brought back some good
memories of days in the band. Tomorrow I'm going to New York City for
Thanksgiving with my roommate. I have lots to do. Will write again soon. Tell
Buddy & Ollie Hello for me." Top of letter irregularly cut. Lightly
soiled at blank right edge. Lightly creased. Fine condition. "Mammaw" was what
Bill Clinton called his maternal grandmother, EDITH VALLIE CASSIDY
(1901-1968). She was the widow of James Eldridge Cassidy (1898-1957) and the
mother of Virginia Dell Cassidy (1923-1994), who married William Jefferson
Blythe III (1918-1946) in 1943. Their son WILLIAM JEFFERSON BLYTHE IV was born
on August 19, 1946, three months after his father died in an automobile
accident. His widowed mother married Roger Clinton (1909-1967) in 1950.
Bill was legally adopted by his stepfather that same year. PHIL McLARTY's
brother Thomas "Mack" McLarty was Chief of Staff in the Clinton White House.
Clinton played tenor saxophone in the high school band and was band major as a
senior. Personal family letters of Presidents rarely appear on the market and
are very desirable. Two items.
