JAMES BUCHANAN. Address Leaf franked: "James Buchanan"
as U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, 1p, 9¾x7¾. "Free" added in

"Benjamin Champneys Esq./Harrisburg/Penna". Postmarked "Washington

hand: "1844/26 April/Jas. Buchanan". At the Democratic National
Convention held in Baltimore just a month later (May 27-30, 1844), Buchanan's
name was placed in nomination for President. He received four votes on the
first ballot. Polk ultimately received the nomination and after his election
chose Buchanan as his Secretary of State (1845-1849). Buchanan had served
in the Pennsylvania legislature (1814-1816), as a U.S. Representative from
Pennsylvania (1821-1831) and U.S. Minister to Russia (1832-1833)
before his election as a U.S. Senator (1834-1845). BENJAMIN CHAMPNEYS,
who was a Pennsylvania State Senator at this time (1843-1846), also served
as Deputy Attorney General of the Mayor's Court in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

President-Judge of the Second Judicial District (1839-1842) and Attorney General
of Pennsylvania (1846-1848). A Democrat like Buchanan, he became a Republican
during the Civil War and again served in the State Senate (1864-1867). Folds,
vertical fold touches the top of the "J" and the "m" of James. ½x1-inch diagonal
hole at lower blank area from removal of red wax seal (remnant on verso). Tiny
nick at upper blank edge, pinhead-size hole (barely visible) at vertical fold to
left of address. Irregular lower edge. Overall, fine condition.
