GERALD R. FORD
Ford writes he does not sign the Oath of Office. Accompanied by a Typescript
of the Oath of Office signed by Ford, dated the day Nixon resigned!
Comprises: (1) ANS of Walt Maher to Ford, 2p, 5x7, front
and verso. On note paper of the Penn State Nittany Lions, 1993 October 4.
In full: "Thank you so much for agreeing to autograph the enclosed
items for our schools. I apologize for taking so long to send them to you; I
misplaced your address. Again thank you! (over) We wonder: what do you consider
to be the proudest moment(s) of your career?" Beneath this question, Ford
has penned a third person ANS: "Pres. Ford does not/sign Oath
of Office." Fine condition. (2) Typescript signed: "Gerald R.
Ford/Aug. 9, 1974." On authentic watermarked White House stationery,
in full: "OATH OF OFFICE. I do solemnly swear that I will
faithfully execute the office of the (sic) President of the United
States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the
Constitution of the United States." Light stains show through from verso at
upper left and right blank corners and mid left and right blank margins. Lightly
creased. Fine condition. After President Nixon's resignation became official
at 11:35 a.m., Ford repeated the Oath of Office in the East Room of the White
House at 12:03 p.m., August 9, 1974. Two items.
