"WE'RE WORKING HARD AND FEEL WE HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO WIN IN NOVEMBER."

GEORGE W. BUSH
. TLS: "George", 1p, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., 1978 September 1. To Hon. and Mrs. Jack McDonald, Great Falls, Virginia. On "Bush/78", "George Bush for Congress" stationery. In full: "Thank you very much for attending the reception given for Laura and me at the Capitol Hill Club. We were delighted with the great turnout and the enthusiasm of everyone present. It was a tremendous boost to our campaign. We're working hard and feel we have a good chance to win in November. Having the opportunity to serve in Congress would be a great challenge to me, and I would welcome it. Again, we enjoyed seeing you at the reception. Very best wishes." During the summer of 1977, 31-year-old George W. Bush met 30-year-old Laura Welch in Midland, Texas at a dinner at the home of mutual friends. They were married on November 5, 1977, just three months later. Bush won the 1978 Republican primary for Congress in the 19th Congressional District, a large West Texas district that included his hometown of Midland, defeating two opponents. In the November 7, 1978 general election, he was defeated by Democratic State Senator Kent Hance, a former professor at Texas Tech University. Hance served in Congress from 1979-1985, lost the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in 1984 and became a Republican in 1985. Republican Congressman JACK H. McDONALD represented Michigan in the House of Representatives from 1967-1973, failing to be renominated in 1972. After the Organizational Meeting of the Draft Bush 2000 Committee held in Washington on February 9, 1999, 72 current and former members of Congress, including McDonald, signed a letter to then Texas Governor Bush urging him to run for President. On June 12, 1999, four months later, Governor Bush announced his candidacy for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination. Lightly creased. Folds.
