WOODROW WILSON
Acknowledging sympathy upon the death of the First Lady.
TLS: "Woodrow Wilson" as 28th U.S. President, 1p, 7x8¾. The
White House, Washington, 1914 August 15. To Charles H. Grasty, Baltimore.
In full: "I want you to know how real a comfort it was to me to get
your telegram of sympathy. It is very delightful to feel the warm touch of a
friend's hand at such a time, and your telegram has served to give me strength
and courage." Nine days earlier, on August 6, 1914, Wilson's wife, Ellen
Louise Axson Wilson, had died of Bright's disease at the age of 54. She
was the last First Lady to die while her husband was President. CHARLES
HENRY GRASTY, noted journalist, editor and publisher of the Baltimore "Sun",
had played an important role in Wilson's victory in the 1912 Presidential
campaign. In 1910, Grasty had enlarged the "Sunday Sun" and added the "Evening
Sun", all of which served as forums for his attacks on political machines.
Grasty, who had seen Wilson's presidential potential while the latter was
President of Princeton (1902-1910), campaigned vigorously for Wilson both in
print and in person. His efforts so affected his health that he retired to
Europe to recuperate before the end of 1914. Even while resting, he could not
stay away from newspaper work, and he served as a war correspondent for the
Associated Press until his return to the U.S. in 1916. Light stains, including a
nailhead-size one in a blank area between Wilson's first and last name. Overall,
fine condition.
