Rare letter as Vice President-designate.
TLS: "Jerry Ford" as Vice President-designate, 1p, 8x10½.
Office of the Minority Leader, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.,
1973 November 30. To J. Arthur Russell, Russell Photographs, Grand Rapids,
Michigan. In full: "I appreciate receiving the pictures you took of
the activities at the Kent County Airport in 1964; I'm very pleased to have
them. I will also keep your offer of photo assignments in mind should the need
arise. Again, many thanks for your thoughtfulness in providing me with the
prints. Warmest personal regards." On October 10, 1973, Vice President Agnew
resigned and pleaded no contest to charges of income tax evasion. On October 12,
1973, President Nixon nominated Michigan Congressman and House Minority Leader
Gerald R. Ford as Vice President under provisions of the 25th Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution. Ford was confirmed by a vote of the House and Senate and
sworn in as the first appointed U.S. Vice President on December 6, 1973, just
six days after writing this letter. Lightly creased. Horizontal fold touches
the "Je" and "y" of signature. Light striations from the page of a scrap book
from which this was once attached. Slightly soiled at upper left corner. Fine
condition.
