JAMES A. GARFIELD. ALS: "J.A. Garfield" as
Congressman, 1p, 5x8. Committee on Appropriations, House of
Representatives, Washington, D.C., 1873 May 7. To C.A.McCullough, 61 Barrow
St., N.Y. In full: "In answer to yours of the 3rd inst. I have to say
that I was a Maj. General in the Volunteer Army of the U.S. when I resigned my
Commission, Dec 5, 1863 and took my seat as a member of the House of
Representatives." Garfield had been elected to Congress in 1862 without
any campaigning on his part while Brigadier General of Volunteers. His term
was to begin on March 4, 1863, but he decided to remain in the military. After
being appointed Chief of Staff under General Rosecrans in February 1863 and
being promoted to Major General on September 19, 1863, he resigned his
commission to take his seat in Congress. It was rumored that President
Lincoln was pleased because it was easier to find Major Generals than supportive
Republicans. Ink smudge where Garfield corrected the date from "6th" to
"7th". Mounting remnants on verso of integral leaf, light show through
(not touching signature). Fine condition.
