(2) TLS: "Jack" by presidential staff member Jack H. Watson, Jr., 1p, 6¼x9¼, on White House stationery, Washington, 1977 March 8. To Bobby White, Baltimore. In full: "Governor Mandel sent us the enclosed Inaugural announcement and asked President Carter to sign it for you. I hope that his signature will be a good addition to your collection." Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as the 39th President on Thursday, January 20, 1977, at 12:05 p.m. on a platform erected on the east portico of the Capitol. The weather was clear and cold. Chief Justice Warren Earl Burger addressed Carter as "Jimmy" and the President-elect, when repeating the oath, stated his name as "Jimmy" instead of "James Earl." The inaugural address, written largely by Carter, was short, taking only 17 minutes to deliver. It drew on a variety of sources, including Jefferson's first inaugural and the words of the Old Testament prophet Micah. After the ceremony, Carter, accompanied by his wife, Rosalynn, whose left hand he held, walked the mile and a half from the Capitol to the White House, even though a bullet-proof limousine had been assigned to him for the trip. As he walked the traditional route, later their daughter, Amy, and other members of the family joined in the walk. Carter, his family and guests entered a solar-heated reviewing stand in front of which the two-hour inaugural parade passed. In the evening, the Carters attended seven inaugural balls given in their honor. Fine condition. Two items.
