THEODORE ROOSEVELT and ELIHU ROOT. Partly Printed DS: "Theodore
Roosevelt" as President and "Elihu Root" as Secretary of
State, 1p, 23x19. Washington, 1908 December 16. Appointment of
Horace Lee Washington of the District of Columbia as Consul General of the
United States at Marseilles, France. WASHINGTON also served as U.S. Consul
General in Cape Town (1906), Liverpool (1914-1922) and London (1926). Theodore
Roosevelt and ELIHU ROOT were the first two Americans to win the Nobel Peace
Prize. President Roosevelt won in 1906 for his "happy role in bringing to an
end the bloody war recently waged between two of the world's great powers, Japan
and Russia", and his Secretary of State won in 1912 for "bringing about better
understanding between the countries of North and South America". Toned. Shaded
at margins. Creased. Folds, vertical fold touches "Ro" in Root. Lightly soiled.
Full, 3½-inch seal with horizontal fold.
