Document 258523 ISABELLA I Five months after removing Columbus as Governor of Hispaniola, before he returned to Spain, the Queen gives money to three subjects. Manuscript DS: "Yo la Reyna" ("I the Queen"), 1p, 8¾x12¼. No place, 1499 November 20. In Old Spanish, not translated. "veynte" ("20") has been filled in by the Queen. Countersigned by her secretary: "Gaspar de Trizio". Seven line Manuscript DS: "Diego de Salinas" at bottom, also in Old Spanish, relaying the order. Queen Isabella orders the Queen's Chamberlain, Sancho de Paredes, to give money to Pedro Campañero and his son, Juan Campañero, of Santa Fe and the widow Maria Dias of Chinchilla and get a receipt, which will be entered into the accounts. Christopher Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic under the sponsorship of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. On the first and second voyages (August 3, 1492 to March 15, 1493 and September 25, 1493 to June 11, 1496), Columbus sighted the majority of the islands of the Caribbean and established a base on the island of Hispaniola (now divided into Haiti and the Dominican Republic). On the third voyage (May 30, 1498 to October 1500) he reached Trinidad and Venezuela and the Orinoco River delta. Meanwhile, his enemies in Spain had convinced the monarchs that Hispaniola should have a new governor. In May 1499, the crown removed Columbus. On June 20, 1499, Queen Isabella condemned Columbus for having enslaved the natives of the West Indies and freed them. Newly appointed Governor Francisco de Bobadilla arrived on August 23, 1500 and promptly had Columbus arrested, shackled in irons and returned to Spain. Columbus was later pardoned and with royal support, embarked on his fourth voyage (May 9, 1502 to November 7, 1504). He returned to South America and sailed from Cape Honduras to the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Veragua and Panama. Queen Isabella died on November 26, 1504. Folds, vertical fold touches signature. Lightly soiled and stained. Tears from opening have been repaired with tape at 2 places on verso (no show through).
