Document 18794 OSCAR STRAUS Operetta and film composer. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mrs. Askoevitz/with best regards/Oscar Straus". Sepia, 8x10. After a brief career as conductor, the Austrian composer turned entirely to composition. He composed operas, instrumental works and operettas, including A Waltz Dream (1907) and The Chocolate Soldier (1908). Straus also wrote scores for Hollywood, including Ernest Lubitsch's The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) and The Chocolate Soldier, which was nominated for a 1941 Academy Award for Best Score. Ink note on verso (unknown hand) "Autograph/for/Mrs Fannie Askovitz" (lightly shows through). Light surface creases, most not evident head on. Scuffed at blank margins. Overall, fine condition.
