Document 49368 DAVID M. KEY Former Confederate officer appointed to succeed the late Senator Andrew Johnson in 1875. Signature: "D.M. Key/Postmaster General/Oct 28. 1878", 3½x2¼ card. David McKendree Key (1824-1900) was Lieutenant Colonel of the Forty-third Tennessee Infantry in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Tennessee Senator Andrew Johnson, the only former U.S. President to serve in the Senate, serving from August 18, 1875 to January 19, 1877. Key was an unsuccessful candidate for election to fill the vacancy in 1876. He later served as Postmaster General in the Cabinet of President Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1880).
