In full: "May I thank you most cordially for your kind invitation to attend the Dinner of the Four Freedoms Foundation on January 30. I deeply appreciate your request but am sorry to say that I will be in Hyde Park on that day. With many regrets." In his Annual Message to Congress on January 6, 1941, President Roosevelt described a better future for the whole world, founded upon "four essential human freedoms". In part: "The first is freedom of speech and expression...The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way...The third is freedom from want...The fourth is freedom from fear...that no nation will commit an act of aggression against any neighbor...." The Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, established at Hyde Park, New York, presents the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards to outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the ideals set forth in FDR's Four Freedoms address to Congress.
