Just four and a half months after her husband died, before having the franking privilege, Mrs. Roosevelt writes to his biographer.
Autograph Note unsigned, on left half of picture postcard, 5½x3¾. Sagamore Hill, (1919) May 19. 2-cent Washington stamp affixed, postmarked Oyster Bay, N.Y., May 21, 1919. Addressed by Mrs. Roosevelt to: "Wm. R. Thayer/8 Berkeley St/Cambridge/Mass." In full: "Thank you many times - You have the gift of saying the thing that helps, and not the one that hurts." Italian postcard picturing a woodcut by Guido Marussig entitled "Lembi di Patria", depicting Zara in Porta Marina. Former President Theodore Roosevelt had died on January 6, 1919. On October 27, 1919, the 61st anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt's birth, a Special Act of Congress granted his widow the franking privilege, free use of the mails for life. WILLIAM ROSCOE THAYER's Theodore Roosevelt: An Intimate Biography was published by Houghton Mifflin later in 1919. Lightly soiled front and verso. Corners worn and creased. Rust paper clip stain at upper margin on image side (no show through). Fine condition.
