BESS TRUMAN
Thank you for orchids that turned her "very dull winter dress" into a "spring costume" she wore when "Mrs. Churchill had lunch with us".
ALS: "Bess Truman" as First Lady, 3p, 4½x7, front and verso. The White House, Washington, no date. To Mrs. Williams. In full: "It was so very kind of you and Mr. Williams to send us those lovely orchids! The one you sent me made a spring costume out of what would otherwise have been a very dull winter dress on the day Mrs. Churchill had lunch with us. I was so delighted to find you & Mr. W 'downstairs' Sunday evening - Louise hadn't [told] me who were [sic] coming. Thank you so much for so kindly thinking of me and for giving me so much pleasure." Mrs. Churchill, of course, was Winston Churchill's wife. Nine months after Winston Churchill failed to be reelected as Britain's Prime Minister, he visited President Truman in Washington. On March 4th and 5th, 1946, President and Mrs. Truman and Winston and Clementine Churchill traveled by train from Washington to Jefferson City, Missouri and then drove to Fulton, twenty miles further. On March 5, 1946, at the request of Fulton's Westminster College, Churchill was introduced by President Truman and gave his now famous "Iron Curtain" speech to a crowd of 40,000. Lightly stained and slightly soiled. 1 stain just touches the top of the "e" in Bess.
