     Document 178826

NANCY REAGAN
The First Lady greets the son of Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Elliott & Patty-/So happy to be together on a very special/day- Nancy Reagan" as First Lady. Color, 8x10 overall, image 7½x7½ (one surface). Mrs. Reagan shakes hands with Elliott Roosevelt as his wife, Patty, looks on. Formerly Mayor of Miami Beach, Elliott was the son of President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was married five times: Betty Browning (1932-1933), Ruth Googins (1933-1944), Faye Emerson (1944-1950), Minnewa Bell (1951-1960) and Patty Whitehead whom he married in 1960. His first four marriages ended in divorce. Patty and Elliott were married for almost 30 years when he died in 1990 at the age of 80. The White House stamp on verso indicates this photograph was taken on October 9, 1984, no doubt during a White House celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Elliott's mother, Eleanor Roosevelt. Superb association. President Reagan, in his speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination in 1980, quoted FDR when he said America has a "rendezvous with destiny." 2 words at left light, else in fine condition.
