Document 17464 BENJAMIN HARRISON Last President before George W. Bush to be elected without winning the popular vote. Signature: "Benj Harrison", 3¼x1 affixed to 4x1¼ ledger sheet. The grandson of the 9th U.S. President, William H. Harrison, Benjamin Harrison defeated incumbent 22nd U.S. President Grover Cleveland in 1888 to become the 23rd U.S. President. He lost the popular vote but won in the electoral college. Until 2000, when the son of the 41st U.S. President was elected 43rd U.S. President, every elected U.S. President since 1888 had won both the popular and electoral votes. In 1892, Harrison became the first incumbent Republican President to lose an election when he was defeated by Cleveland, who added "24th U.S. President" to his resumé. "President United States" has been penned in unknown hand on mounting sheet beneath signature. Light glue stains show through at blank margins. Fine condition.
