     Document 56841

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
The former President thanks the toy manufacturer for a new Panasonic automatic radio.
TLS: "Ike E" with holograph postscript signed: "D", 1p, 7x10½. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1965 August 26. To toy manufacturer David H. Marx, New York. In full: "I have just been checked out on the new R-1000 automatic radio. Soon, I suppose, they will have one that will respond to someone's thought that they would like to hear music. As always, I am complimented by your thoughtfulness and want you to know of my appreciation. My best to your family." In a handwritten postscript, the former President adds: "P.S. Did our horse win?" Folds, none touch signatures. Fine condition. With original envelope bearing metered franked envelope with facsimile signature and five stars. Torn at top edge and at right blank corner. In 1965, Panasonic introduced the R-1000 "Radar-Matic" radio with automatic tuning and a sensitivity selector. Founded by Louis and DAVID MARX, Louis Marx & Co. started business in 1919. During World War II, their factories were converted to support the war effort. In 1945, following VE day, General Dwight D. Eisenhower invited Louis Marx to join him as Industrial Advisor in Germany. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Marx made over 20% of the toys sold in the United States and had factories in ten countries, while licensing and exporting to others. In the early 1960s, Marx produced the now rare General Dwight D. Eisenhower figure (go to http://www.stewartsattic.com/marx/marxfigures.htm). In 1972, Louis Marx retired and sold the company to Quaker Oats. Two items.
