Document 15601 DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER The President appoints a career army officer as his Deputy Assistant. Partly Printed DS: "Dwight D. Eisenhower" as 34th U.S. President, 1p, 19½x16. Washington, 1953 September 5. In part: "To Wilton B. Persons, of Florida, Greeting: Reposing special trust and confidence in your Integrity, Prudence, and Ability, I do appoint you The Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States of America...." Also bears an Autopen signature "John Foster Dulles" as Secretary of State. Wilton B. Persons (1896-1977) was a career Army officer who had entered the U.S. Army Coast Artillery in 1917 and advanced through the ranks to Major General in 1944. He had served in both the A.E.F. in World War I and in Europe in World War II. Persons headed the office of legislative liaison for the Department of Defense between 1948 and his retirement in 1949. He was called back to active duty as a special assistant to General Dwight D. Eisenhower at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe from 1951-1952 and was active on behalf of Eisenhower's presidential campaign in 1952. By this document, Persons became Deputy Assistant to the President in 1953. He became Assistant to the President in 1958, in effect, replacing Sherman Adams as Eisenhower's Chief of Staff.
