Document 253554 FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT President, 1933-1945. Large Printed Portrait inscribed and signed: "For my friend H.H. Gouchenour/from/Franklin D. Roosevelt." B/w, 16x193/4. Printed at left: FRANKLIN/DELANO/ROOSEVELT/1932. Drawn while FDR was Governor. This famous image was first used in the 1932 presidential campaign. The artist Jacob Perskey, a close friend of Roosevelt's drew a number of portraits, many of which were used in subsequent political campaigns. At the 1932 Democratic National Convention, held in Chicago Stadium on June 27-July 2, Roosevelt was nominated as the Presidential candidate on the fourth ballot with 945 votes (766 were needed for the nomination). FDR immediately chartered a plane to Chicago to give his acceptance speech, becoming the first candidate to fly to a political convention as well as the first to make an acceptance speech and address the delegates in person. In November 1932 FDR and his running mate John Nance Garner of Texas, were elected in a landslide over incumbents President Herbert Hoover and Vice President Charles Curtis. Printed on tan paper.
