Document 13493 HARRY S TRUMAN Written 13 days after FDR died, the day the U.N. Conference opened in San Francisco. TLS: "Harry S Truman" as 33rd U.S. President, 1p, 7x9. The White House, Washington, 1945 April 25. To Ernest L. Schmidt, Kansas City, Missouri. Begins: "My dear Ernie". In full: "It was so thoughtful of you to send me that letter of April twentieth and I appreciate your word of sympathy. To know that I have the prayers and good wishes of my friends means a great deal to me." Handwritten beneath signature: "Say hello to all the gang." Thirteen days after becoming President, Truman responds to an old Kansas City friend who offered sympathy on President Roosevelt's death. Roosevelt died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945, and Truman succeeded to the presidency only 12 weeks after his inauguration as Vice President. The day he wrote this letter, the United Nations Conference on International Organization opened in San Francisco, resulting in the signing of the United Nations Charter on June 26, 1945.
