HERBERT HOOVER
The President thanks a California supporter.
TLS: "Herbert Hoover" as 31st U.S. President, 1p, 7x9. The White House, Washington, 1932 March 19. To Mark L. Requa, San Francisco. In full: "I have followed with interest the activities of yourself and my other friends who have been cooperating so loyally on my behalf in California, and I want you and them to know how much I appreciate their efforts. The work in California has had much more than local significance." Hoover, who had easily defeated New York Governor Al Smith in the 1928 election 444-87 electoral votes, was seeking reelection in 1932. At the Republican National Convention, June 14-16, 1932, Hoover was renominated on the first ballot. Two weeks later, the Democrats nominated New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt on the fourth ballot. Hoover had attended Stanford University in California and had met his future wife there. They were married in Monterey, California in 1899. When Hoover was nominated for President in 1928, it was as a resident of California. But by the summer of 1932, the Depression had reached its lowest point. There were 12 million people unemployed and 18 million on relief. FDR won in a landslide. California's 22 electoral votes and 450 others went to the Democratic Governor, who won 42 states to Hoover's six states and 59 electoral votes. File holes at upper blank edge. Horizontal fold touches the "H" in Hoover. Lightly creased.
