     Document 32345

JAMES A. GARFIELD
President-elect thanks Congressman for congratulations.
Manuscript LS: "J.A. Garfield" as President-elect and Senator-elect, 1p, 8x10¼. Mentor, Ohio, 1880 November 19. To Hon. George C. Hazeltine, Boscobel, Wisconsin. On Garfield's last birthday (his 49th), he writes, in full: "It was very kind in the Hazeltine family to send me a round-robin of greetings and congratulations. Accept for every member my cordial thanks. In the great pressure of work upon me I have only time to acknowledge the receipt of your letter." Lightly creased. Light show through from 4 mounting remnants in upper portion on verso. Smudge at lower right blank area, vertical fold through the "J" of signature. Accompanied by unsigned campaign cabinet card. Sepia, 4¼x6½ overall, oval image 3½x4¼ (two surfaces). Captioned: "Gen. James A. Garfield/Republican Candidate for President 1880." Printed poem, "Dreamland", and advertisement for Vaseline on verso. Lightly soiled, stain in upper left blank corner of photograph. Light show through and rippling from mounting. Overall, fine condition. Garfield had served in the House of Representatives from 1863 until 11 days before he wrote this letter. He resigned on November 8, 1880, having been elected 20th U.S. President on November 2, 1880. Garfield, the only incumbent Congressman ever elected President, had also been elected U.S. Senator by the Ohio legislature. He declined his election to the Senate on December 23, 1880, after the Electoral College officially declared him elected President. Less than four months after his inauguration, on the morning of July 2, 1881, President Garfield was shot at the railway depot in Washington, D.C. He died from the effects of the wound on September 19, 1881. GEORGE C. HAZELTINE (1832-1922) was a Republican Congressman from Wisconsin from 1877-1883. A letter of Garfield as President-elect is very desirable as an excellent substitute for a presidential letter, which is extremely rare. Two items.
