Document 3940 JAMES MONROE and JOHN QUINCY ADAMS Ship's papers for passenger ship John Dickinson leaving New York City with an 11-man crew. Partly Engraved DS: "James Monroe" as fifth U.S. President and "John Quincy Adams", future sixth U.S. President, as Secretary of State, 1p, 10½x14. On vellum. Washington, 1819 January 8. Countersigned: "David Gelston Collector", State of and District of New York. GELSTON served as Collector from 1801-1820. Ship's papers issued out of New York City for the "Ship John Dickinson of New York, John Baush master or commander of the burthen of five hundred eighty eight & 74/95 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns, navigated with Eleven men to pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seisure or molestation...." This ship was named for member of the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania and Delaware, JOHN DICKINSON (1732-1808). He served as President of Delaware (1781) and Pennsylvania (1782-1785) and was one of the signers of the U.S. Constitution from Delaware. The Monroe Doctrine, enunciated by President Monroe in 1823, was written by Secretary of State Adams. Documents signed by two U.S. Presidents are always desirable. 2½-inch diameter paper seal affixed with red wax at lower left. Signature of Monroe is dark, Adams' a little light but completely legible. Folds, vertical fold through "M" of Monroe and the "l" in Gelston. Creased, lightly browned at folds and at edges.
