Document 5688 JOHN QUINCY ADAMS Grant of land to a Revolutionary War Major's widow. She assigned it to the grandfather of impressionist painter Paul Sawyier, who was later born on that land. Partly Printed DS: "J.Q. Adams" as President, 1p, 12¾x17¼. Washington, 1826 July 29. On vellum. Countersigned: "Geo. Graham" as Commissioner of the General Land Office. In part: "Know Ye, That in consideration of Military Service performed by John Stephenson a Major for the war, to the United States in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, and in pursuance of an Act of the Congress of the United States, passed on the 10th day of August, in the year 1790, intituled 'An Act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, to obtain Titles to certain Lands lying north west of the river Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota;' and other Acts of the said Congress, amendatory of the said Act, There is granted, by the United States, unto Nathaniel Sawyier assignee of Mary Stephenson widow and devisee of said John Stephenson a certain tract of land containing Three Hundred acres situate between the Little Miami and Sciota rivers northwest of the river Ohio as by survey bearing date the 16th day of January in the year 1824...." Graham has also signed a certification on verso, which is also docketed with notations on the recording of the deed. From the "Journal of the House of Representatives": On December 9, 1834, Virginia Congressman William S. Archer, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, "presented a petition of William Minter, legal representative of John Stephenson, deceased, praying to be paid the commutation of half pay to which the said John Stephenson was entitled as a major in the Virginia line of the army of the revolution." The petition was referred to the House Committee on Revolutionary Claims, as it was when it was reintroduced in 1835, 1837, 1838, 1840 and 1845. No action was ever taken. American impressionist painter PAUL SAWYIER (1865-1917) was born at Table Rock in Madison County, Ohio on March 23, 1865, on his grandfather Nathaniel Sawyier's farm. Madison County is situated between the Miami and Sciota Rivers. Nathaniel Sawyier built his farm there on the land granted to him by this document. Land bounties such as the one offered here were issued to reward military service in past wars, encourage enlistment in pending wars and to aid special groups. Virginia gave more generous bounties than any other colony or state and a special Virginia military district was reserved north of the Ohio to fulfill these grants. At the time President Adams signed this document, the United States was in official national mourning for his father, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson who had each died 25 days earlier, on July 4, 1826. Folds do not touch signatures. Pinhead-size hole at cross fold touches 1 letter. Lightly creased and soiled at margins, affecting some text. Overall, fine condition.
