Document 38870 MARTIN VAN BUREN Eighth President, 1837-1841. Signature: "Free/M. Van Buren", 2½x1. Van Buren had the franking privilege while U.S. Senator from New York (1821-1828) and Vice President (1833-1837). He served as eighth U.S. President from 1837-1841. Van Buren had free use of the mails for life after he left the presidency simply by signing his name or "franking" the envelope. It was not until the Former Presidents Act of 1958, which went into effect in December 1973, that Congress formalized the granting of the franking privilege to former Presidents and their widows.
