Document 31180 MILLARD FILLMORE Penned by the future President while in Congress. Address Leaf franked: "Free/M. Fillmore/M.C.", 5½x3¼. Oval postmark: "BUFFALO N.Y. OCT 6". Addressed by the future 13th U.S. President to: "Mrs. Ann L. Dixon/Ebensburgh/Cambria Co- Pennsylvania". Fillmore first entered Congress as a Whig in 1833 at the age of 33. He did not run for reelection in 1834 but ran for and was reelected to Congress in 1836, 1838 and 1840. Fillmore did not seek reelection in 1842 but sought the Whig nomination for Vice President in 1844. In 1847, he was elected Comptroller of the state of New York and, in 1848, was elected Vice President, succeeding to the presidency upon Zachary Taylor's death in 1850. The franked address leaf offered here was signed by Fillmore while a Member of Congress ("M.C.") between 1833-1835 or 1837-1843. Browned. Seal stain touches some letters. Lightly creased.
