Document 86825 RICHARD NIXON Postmarked the day Apollo 11 returned from the Moon. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Richard Nixon", 6½x3½. Commemorating the Apollo 11 Splashdown, 6-cent stamp commemorating the 1968 Christmas eve lunar orbiting flight of Apollo 8 affixed, pictorially postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Florida, July 24, 1969, the day Apollo 11 returned from man's first lunar landing. Apollo 11 had landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969 with a plaque attached to the ladder on the landing gear strut on the descent stage of the Lunar Excursion Module. The plaque depicted both hemispheres and the message: "HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH/FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON/JULY 1969, A.D./WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND". The facsimile signatures of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and President Richard Nixon were engraved on the plaque. Staple holes at upper blank margin.
