Document 27453 RUTHERFORD B. HAYES Elected President by the margin of one electoral vote. Executive Mansion Card signed: "R.B. Hayes" as President, 4¼x2½. The Executive Mansion card was introduced by Hayes' predecessor, U.S. Grant, late in his administration. "Executive Mansion" was changed to "White House" in October 1901, by Theodore Roosevelt and shortly thereafter to "The White House". The White House card is still in use today. Hayes' November 7, 1876 election as President was not decided until March 2, 1877 because 20 electoral votes were in dispute. A Congressionally-appointed Electoral Commission of eight Republicans and seven Democrats declared that all disputed votes went to Republican Hayes, giving him 185 electoral votes to Democrat Samuel J. Tilden's 184. On Saturday March 3, one day after being told he would be the next President, Hayes took his oath in a private ceremony in the Red Room of the White House. His term did not begin until the next day, but since inauguration day fell on a Sunday, he was publicly sworn in on Monday, March 5 at the Capitol. A torchlight parade held that evening was followed by a reception at the Willard Hotel. There was no inaugural parade or inaugural ball. A signed White House card is the most desirable form of a simple presidential signature as it dates it while he was in office. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
