Document 253061 ULYSSES S. GRANT Signed as Republicans urged him to run for a third term. Cabinet Photograph signed: "U.S. Grant/Galena, Ill./Nov. 25th 1879" on verso. Sepia, 4¼x5¾ overall, 4x5½ image (two surfaces). Former 18th President Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877) signed this photograph after returning with his family to his former home in Galena, Illinois following a world tour. On May 17, 1877, Mr. and Mrs. Grant and one son had sailed from Philadelphia for Liverpool on the steamer Indiana. They arrived in England on May 28th and were received by Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales. The Grants then toured the European continent and, aboard the United States man-of-war Vandalia, cruised the Mediterranean. They then toured India and the Far East. Leaving Yokohama on September 3rd, the popular Grant arrived in San Francisco on September 20, 1879. On his journey east, he was feted with banquets and public receptions and was enthusiastically greeted at every stop, as he had been throughout his world tour. While he was out of the country, a movement had begun to renominate him for the presidency in 1880. Grant declined to take any part in the movement, preferring instead that the nomination come to him unsolicited or not at all. On June 2, 1880, six months after Grant signed this photograph, the Republican National Convention opened at Exposition Hall in Chicago. Incumbent Republican President Hayes declined to be renominated. On the first ballot, Grant led all others with 304 delegate votes. Grant's support was consistent, varying between 302 and 313 on the first 35 ballots. On the 36th ballot, Congressman James A. Garfield received 399 votes and the nomination. Grant was second with 306. Lightly soiled and stained in blank background and on verso, not touching signature. Upper loops of his signature evident at lower blank border on front. Fine condition.
