BILL CLINTON
The new President congratulates a war-hero Congressman on his birthday.
TLS: "Bill" as 42nd U.S. President, 1p, 6¾x9. The White House, Washington, 1993 March 23. Embossed presidential seal at top center. To Democratic Representative Neal Smith of Iowa on his 73rd birthday. In full: "Hillary and I want to join with your family and fiends in wishing you a very happy birthday. Birthdays are a time to remember the past, but also a time to look ahead to the future. We have been chosen to represent the people of America, and we must stand united and work together to create a better America for our children. With best wishes on your birthday." SMITH had served in the Army Air Force (1942-1945) in World War II and was awarded nine battle stars, an Air Medal, four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Order of the Purple Heart. He served in Congress from 1959-1995, losing reelection in 1994. During Watergate, Smith served as Chairman of the House Special Committee on Campaign Expenditures (1973-1975). Rubber stamp "Mar 24 1993" on verso with light show through at top left blank corner, else in fine condition.
