Cut from upper right of envelope imprinted: "Vice President's Chamber." Colfax was a Republican Congressman from Indiana from 1855-1869. He was Speaker of the House during the last five years of his term, including the final 16 months of the Civil War. After being elected Grant's Vice President in 1868, Colfax was denied renomination in 1872 because the Republicans thought he might seek the Liberal Republican Party nomination for President. Charges of corruption then arose concerning his involvement in the Crédit Mobilier of America stock scandal. In 1873, the 50-year-old Colfax was fully exonerated from charges of corruption brought against him but his political career was over.
