FRANCIS GARY POWERS
U.S. spy shot down over the Soviet Union.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Francis Gary Powers", 6½x3½. First Day Cover of the 13-cent embossed airmail stamp, postmarked Memphis, Tennessee, December 1, 1973, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Korean War veteran Francis Gary Powers (1929-1977) worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. On May 1, 1960, the U-2 spy plane piloted by him was shot down over the USSR by a SAM-2 missile. Powers was captured and sentenced to ten years in prison but was released in 1962 in exchange for convicted Soviet spy Rudolph Abel. Powers was killed in 1977 when his helicopter crashed. Fine condition.
