Document 254675 FERDINAND FOCH To Marshal Joffre on the death of General Maunoury. ALS: "F.Foch", 1½p, 5x8¼. No place, 1923 March 30. To Marshal Joffre. In French with rough English translation. In full: "My comrades of the French army and myself are very sensitive to the memory which you hold of General Maunoury and are very touched by the feelings that you express to us of your neighbor and your comrade of combat in the Battle of the Marne of 1914." This letter between France's greatest military leaders of World War I was written shortly after Maunoury's death. Generals Michel MAUNOURY and FOCH had led the French Army into Lorraine on August 14, 1914. After the invasion failed, Maunoury was given command of the French Sixth Army on the Western Front and took part in the Battle of the Marne in September under JOFFRE, Commander in Chief of the French forces. Maunoury was seriously wounded in 1915 and was forced to leave the Army. He died in 1923. Marshal Ferdinand Foch was Allied Supreme Commander in 1918 and headed the Armistice negotiations.
