Document 175650 CANAAN BANANA and JANET BANANA First President and First Lady of Zimbabwe. Photograph signed: "C.S. Banana" as first President of Zimbabwe and "J. Banana". B/w, 4x6. President Banana's signature is a little light; his wife's is fine. Accompanied by 1985 printed transmittal slip and original postmarked airmail envelope bearing two Zimbabwe stamps. Fine condition. The British colony of Southern Rhodesia declared its independence in 1965. Britain termed the act illegal and demanded that the white-controlled government of Ian Smith broaden voting rights to provide for eventual rule by the black majority. After years of embargoes and guerilla warfare, an internal settlement was reached and Southern Rhodesia became Zimbabwe. On April 18, 1980, the independence of Zimbabwe was achieved with Banana as first President; he served until 1987. In 1998, former President Canaan Banana was found guilty of sodomy and homosexual assault and sentenced to two years in prison. He was released in 2001. His wife and daughter moved to London in 2000. In an interview published in "The Guardian" on January 23, 2002, Janet Banana said: "Before we moved out of the State House, my husband's bodyguard gave me some startling news. He told me, 'Canaan is gay.' I was shocked." Three items. SEE IF DOCUMENT 175650 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
