JAMES CLINTON
Revolutionary War general sells land in New York.
Manuscript DS: "James Clinton", 1p, 7¼x11¼. New York, 1785 April 20. Also signed: "William Cross". Transfer of 20 acres of land in Ulster County. In part: "We James Clinton and William Cross Do by virtue of an Act of the Legislature of this State in first case made and provided and in consequence of the Certificate and transfer hereto annexed Locate the following tract of Land...So as to include allyd Vacant Space between the two shares lying appoint to a Tract of land of about 150 acres now belonging to the said James Clinton and William Cross lately laid out into a town lying in the County of Ulster supposed to contain 20 acres." James Clinton was born in Ulster County, which was six miles west of the Hudson and sixty miles north of New York. His father was a farmer and land surveyor. James was the older brother of Vice President George Clinton (who at the time of this document was Governor of New York) and the father of DeWitt Clinton, Mayor of New York City and 1812 presidential candidate. James Clinton was a career soldier who defended the western frontiers of Ulster and Orange Counties and fought in the capture of Fort Frontenac in the French and Indian War. He took part in General Richard Montgomery's expedition to Quebec in November 1775. As a brigadier general in the Revolutionary War, Clinton led a brigade in 1781 at the Battle of Yorktown. After the war he was again involved in land issues as a commissioner appointed to adjust the boundary line between New York and Pennsylvania. He was also a delegate at the New York convention that adopted the U.S. Constitution. Lightly creased. ¼-inch diagonal cut at bottom left blank corner (all paper intact). Soiled at blank margins. Overall, fine condition.
