Document 28141 SAMUEL F. SMITH America's other national anthem. Autograph Poem signed: "S.F. Smith", 4¼x3¼card. Titled by him: "'America'." In full: "My country - 'tis of thee,/Sweet land of liberty,/of thee I sing;/Land where my fathers died,/Land of the pilgrims' pride,-/From every mountain side/Let freedom ring." Smith has noted the year he wrote this song at the lower left: "1832" and when he wrote this copy: "Jan. 1886". During a visit to Germany, 23-year-old theological student Samuel F. Smith was impressed that schoolchildren started each day by singing a hymn. He wrote "America" for this country's schoolchildren to the tune of a simple German song he heard that, unbeknownst to Smith, was the melody of the British anthem, "God Save the King". Slightly shaded edges. Tip of upper right corner a little worn. 1x1/16-inch light stain at upper edge. Overall, fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 28141 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
