Document 17782 CASSIUS M. CLAY Kentucky abolitionist and Minister to Russia. AQS: "C.M. Clay", 1p, 5x7¼. White Hall, Ky., 1887. In full: "Truth only is Immortal." Cassius Clay published the abolitionist newspaper "True American" in 1845. He kept two cannons loaded in front of his Lexington, Kentucky office. He later served as Lincoln's Minister to Russia from 1861-1862, when he accepted a commission as Major General of Volunteers. However, in a speech in Washington shortly after his return, Major General Clay declared that he would never fight while slavery was protected in the seceding states. He wanted to return to Russia and personally told Lincoln, who reappointed him in 1863. Clay was U.S. Minister when the United States acquired Alaska from Russia in 1867, returning home in 1869.
