WILLIAM INGE. Partly mimeographed partly
carbon TLS: "William Inge" in ink, initialed "WI" twice on
attached riders, 2p, 6½x11, separate sheets. New York, 1950 June 16.
Contract letter to The Theatre Guild, countersigned by Sara Greenspan of
the Guild. In part: "You have requested me and I hereby grant you
an irrevocable license to radio broadcast and rebroadcast my play entitled COME
BACK, LITTLE SHEBA (herein referred to as the 'Play'). The broadcast and
rebroadcast, if any, hereunder shall take place between September 10, 1950 and
October 29, 1950, as one of the radio shows to be produced by you and presented
under the sponsorship of U.S. Steel Corporation...You agree at the time of
broadcast to announce over the air that the Play was written by William
Inge. You agree to use Shirley Booth in her original role, provided, however
if for any reason you cannot obtain her services, I shall have the right to
approve the female star...." Two 8x2¼ typed riders are stapled to the
letter at the left, each initialed by Inge and Greenspan. Produced by The
Theatre Guild, Come Back, Little Sheba starring Shirley Booth was on
Broadway for 190 performances from February 15 to July 29, 1950. Come Back,
Little Sheba was broadcast on NBC radio on Theatre Guild on the
Air/United States Steel Hour on February 4, 1951. It starred Gary Cooper and
Shirley Booth. Inge also insisted that Booth play the female star in Wallis'
motion picture. Shirley Booth won the 1952 Academy Award for Best Actress for
her role in Come Back, Little Sheba. Lightly creased and worn. Staple
holes at upper left. Overall, fine condition.
