BENJAMIN W. CROWNINSHIELD. Manuscript LS:
"B.W. Crowninshield" as Madison's Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 8x10.
Navy Department, 1815 April 1. To Lt. R.H.J. Perry, U.S. Navy,
Present. In full: "You will proceed to Newport, Rhode Island, and
report yourself to Captain Jno Orde Creighton for duty under his command."
Addressed on verso to: "Lt. R.H.T. Perry/U.S. Navy/Present." RAYMOND
HENRY JONES PERRY (1789-1826) was the second eldest of the illustrious seafaring
Perry brothers. Raymond, his eldest brother Oliver Hazard, and his youngest
brother Matthew Calbraith fought in the War of 1812 and did so at times
together. The three brothers all dedicated their lives to serving in the U.S.
Navy. CROWNINSHIELD served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Madison
and Monroe (1814-1818). In 1813, JOHN ORDE CREIGHTON became the Commander
of the brig Rattlesnake, with the rank of Master-Commandant, and was made
Captain on April 27, 1816. In June 1807 he had been on the frigate
Chesapeake when it was attacked by the Leopard and had also served
on the President in 1811. Folds and lightly creased touching signature.
Tackhead-size ink blots touch 2 words. Nicked edges, 1-inch separation at folds
in blank areas.
