Document 17088 SECRETARY OF WAR WILLIAM EUSTIS Nine months before the War of 1812 begins, Eustis offers guns to the Governor of Ohio. Manuscript LS: "W. Eustis" as Madison's Secretary of War, 1p, 8x10. War Dept., 1811 September 3. To Return J. Meigs, Governor of Ohio. In full: "I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Excellency's letter of the 25 August. There are at Pittsburgh a number of pieces of Iron Ordnance the property of the U.S. the lightest of which are Six pounders. In case a loan of one or two pair of these pieces shall be considered desireable (sic) by the State of Ohio, on receiving information to that effect the Military agent at Pittsburgh will be directed to deliver them to the order of your Excellency on the conditions proposed in your letter." WILLIAM EUSTIS served as Secretary of War from 1809-1812. A former Revolutionary War surgeon, he was a surgeon in the expedition sent to suppress Shay's Rebellion in 1786 and 1787. He was a Democrat representing Massachusetts in Congress (1801-1805) and was one of the managers appointed by the House of Representatives to conduct impeachment proceedings against John Pickering. After his Cabinet appointment, Eustis was U.S. Minister to the Netherlands (1814-1818), U.S. Congressman (1820-1823) and Governor of Massachusetts, serving until his death in 1825. RETURN JONATHAN MEIGS, JR. was Governor of Ohio from 1810-1814. He was Postmaster General under Madison and Monroe (1814-1823). Meigs served in the Indian fighting in what was then the Northwest Territory (Ohio). He was also Commander of the St. Charles district in Louisiana (1804-1806). Vertical crease just nicks the "W".
