Document 76456 ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS First President of Cyprus, 1960-1974, 1974-1977. Photograph signed in red ink as first President of Cyprus. B/w, 4x6¾ overall, image 3½x5½ (one surface). Makarios (1913-1977) was elected Bishop of Kitium in 1948, becoming Archbishop of the Greek Cypriots in 1950. He led the Greek Cypriot movement for independence from England and unity with Greece in the 1950s, and England exiled him to the Seychelles Islands from 1956-1957 because of his links with a terrorist group. After Cyprus became independent in 1959, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop was elected its first President, serving from August 6, 1960 until he was overthrown by Cypriot troops led by Greek officers on July 15, 1974. Makarios returned to the presidency eight days later, on July 23, 1974, serving until his death on August 3, 1977. Mounting remnants at each corner on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
