Document 43415 ANDREW H. FOOTE Manuscript LS: "A.H. Foote" as Chief of the Bureau Equip & Receiving, 1p, 8½x13. Bu: Equip & Recruiting, 1863 April 9. Union Rear Admiral Foote writes to Commodore C.K. Stribling, Commandant, Navy Yard, Philadelphia. In full: "Yours of the 8th inst. received. The Bureau has directed Adml Paulding to fill the draft for the 'Lehigh.' If the 'Cimmaron' has not sailed, you can transfer eight Landsmen to her as requested by Commander Drake." Foote, while in command off the African coast from 1849-51, was active in capturing slaves and trying to break up the slave trade. He was in command of naval operations on the upper Mississippi from 1861-62 and was about to leave for Charleston to command a squadron when, eleven weeks after writing this letter, he died of the wounds he received at Fort Donelson in 1862. South Carolinian CORNELIUS K. STRIBLING had served in the War of 1812, suppressed piracy in the West Indies in the 1820s, commanded the Ohio of the Pacific squadron in the Mexican War, and was Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (1850-1853). When the Civil War began at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, in 1861, Stribling remained loyal to the Union. Admiral HIRAM PAULDING was in command of the Navy Yard in New York City. Lightly creased.
