U THANT. Typescript signed: "U Thant", 1p, 8½x11. On
parchment-like paper. Headed: "International Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of
Outer Space." Statement by United Nations Secretary General U Thant in the
General Assembly on December 19, 1966. In part: "I should like to
congratulate the Assembly on the success of its work relating to the peaceful
uses of outer space. I trust that it is no less fruitful than that of the
scientists and engineers who have continued to make extraordinary advances in
the exploration of space itself...." A pair of 8-cent Apollo 15
"United States in Space/A Decade of Achievement" stamps has been affixed at the
top and has been postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Florida, August 2, 1971, FIRST
DAY OF ISSUE. The day this was postmarked, Apollo 15 was on the Moon.
Astronauts David R. Scott and James B. Irwin were riding on the Moon in the
first use of the lunar rover, pictured with two passengers on one of the stamps.
U Thant served as third Secretary General of the United Nations (1961-1971).
Fine condition.
