DAVID M. KEY. ALS: "D.M. Key" as
Postmaster General, 1¼p, 6x9½. Post Office Department, Washington, 1877
August 1. To Frank S. Wood, Esq., Batavia, N.Y. In part: "The
respect shown to the authority of the United States by the mobs and rioters
during our late troubles is cause for sincere congratulation. Whilst state
and municipal laws have been defied and their officers and forces resisted, the
officers, soldiers and property of the general government have, on all occasions
and everywhere been respected...." In July, state and federal troops
violently suppressed a nationwide railroad strike over wage cuts. Key was
Hayes' Postmaster General from 1877-1880. Lightly creased. Tape remnant on verso
of signature page shows through to blank area.
