Document 256894
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. TLS: "Eleanor Roosevelt" as First Lady,
1p, 6x9¼. The White House, Washington, 1939 March 17. To Mr. Krape. In
full: "Thank you very much for your letter of March 3, which I read with
great interest. I am so glad you gained something helpful from your visit to New
York and that you have been able to help so many people. Keep it up and success
to you!" Mrs. Roosevelt wrote this letter during the time she and Secretary
of the Interior Harold Ickes were arranging Marian Anderson's appearance at the
Lincoln Memorial. The Black American contralto had been denied permission to
sing in February at Washington's Constitution Hall because of the color of her
skin by the Daughters of the American Revolution who owned the hall. Mrs.
Roosevelt arranged for Anderson to sing at an outdoor concert on Easter Sunday,
April 9, 1939, at the Lincoln Memorial, in front of 75,000 people. Lightly
soiled. Folds. Lightly creased, 1 touches "R". Paper clip impression at upper
margin.
